Where Suppliers Fail the Qualification Process

Their quality systems existed on paper but the audit revealed that procedures were not followed in practice. Stage four eliminated 9. Their production sites did not meet ISO Class 8 cleanroom requirements. Only 7 suppliers reached stage five. All 7 passed sample testing.

Based on what we learned from this project I recommend building a qualification checklist that covers five areas before contacting any supplier. First verify the ISO 13485 certificate directly with the certification body. The certificate number and scope should match what the supplier claims. Second request a technical file sample. A legitimate supplier will have a technical file ready and should be willing to share a redacted version. Third ask for batch records from their most recent production run. This shows whether they actually document their production process or just assemble products without traceability.
Fourth request a video tour of the production facility if an in person visit is not feasible. Ask to see the cleanroom entrance, the sterilization area, and the QC inspection station. A supplier that hesitates to show these areas usually has something to hide. Fifth order sample units for independent testing.
